"Vote for Alyshia Dyer for Washtenaw Sheriff in Michigan, and I believe her position on traffic stops is the most Constitutional I’ve ever seen."
I am proud to share this endorsement and coverage from @boltsmag regarding my stance on traffic stops. As the only candidate in this race who has taken a bold stand against traffic stop quotas and non-safety-related low-level stops, I believe we can do better. Together, we can win this!
Ending Racial Profiling and Discriminatory Practices
In an effort to end racial profiling, Ann Arbor barred local police last year from making low-level traffic stops. This ordinance has prompted candidates for sheriff to propose sweeping reforms to traffic stops across the county. However, it’s not just racial profiling that needs addressing. The issue extends to profiling people who don’t fit a certain mold, such as teenagers, low-income workers, soccer moms, LGBTQ individuals, or just people who look like they could be gay.
Police especially prey on people with former mental health records, as they are easier to gaslight and usually on a lower fixed income without the means to afford an attorney. This practice is not only discriminatory but also undermines the trust between law enforcement and the community.

The Economic Burden of Traffic Fines
Speed traps and traffic tickets are on the rise in metro Detroit as communities look to offset falling tax revenue. Critics say the escalation amounts to a selective tax that hurts businesses, tourism, and pocketbooks. No one should be killed by cops for finally losing their cool when being ticketed every time they try to get to their job to feed their families.
The cost of living is already unaffordable, with car insurance in Michigan being the highest in the nation. For those living in Detroit, it’s quadrupled. Meanwhile, cops are driving around in brand new Range Rovers and Lexuses, purchased with money taken from the mouths of working families. This system is unsustainable and unjust.

A Call for Reform
It’s time for change. We need a sheriff who will prioritize the safety and well-being of all community members, not just those who fit a certain mold or have the means to pay excessive fines. By ending traffic stop quotas and focusing on safety-related enforcement, we can build a fairer, more just system that works for everyone.
I am committed to these reforms and believe that together, we can create a community where everyone feels safe and respected. I look forward to winning this race and working with all of you to make Washtenaw County a better place for everyone.
