Beyond Constantine (Podcast)

Disruptive Fine Art Podcast: 3

Did the Emperor Constantine invent the divinity of Jesus at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD? It’s a popular myth fueled by novels and documentaries — but the historical and scholarly consensus tells a very different story.

In this episode, I dig into the evidence that Christians were calling Jesus “Lord” and “God” — and actively worshipping him as a divine being — within the first few years after his crucifixion. That’s long before Constantine was even born.

We’ll look at the “Maranatha” prayer from the 50s AD, the early hymns embedded in Paul’s letters, and why a popular priest named Arius sparked riots in the streets of Alexandria. Then we’ll walk through what the Council of Nicaea actually did (and didn’t do).

Spoiler: Constantine didn’t invent Jesus’s divinity. He presided over a council that had to define it — because the belief was already so widespread and universally accepted.

“Maranatha.” — Our Lord, come! (1 Corinthians 16:22)
